The road was long, hot and sometimes overly exhausting, but the mission is now complete. I have achieved another Iron Butt Association ride, the SaddleSore 1500. The tally ended up being over 1,600 miles in 35 hours and two minutes. Truthfully, it was grueling at times, and I had a couple of “hiccups” along the way, but I would definitely do it all over again.
Upon arrival in Rapid City, South Dakota, the ending point of the ride, we got checked into our fabulous hotel, unloaded and I immediately headed for a hot shower. After three days of long-distance riding, there’s nothing quite like sipping an adult beverage while enjoying a long shower. Then it was on to a fabulous dinner, complete with the most delicious filet mignon and Caesar salad I’ve ever tasted. And then…SLEEP – much needed and well-deserved. (Check reviews for both hotel and dinner!)
Next stop, the curious town of Deadwood, South Dakota, nestled into the heart of the Black Hills. If you’ve never been, it’s definitely worth a visit. The town dates back to the late 1800s when Colonel George Custer proclaimed his discovery of gold there at which point the lawless town’s population quickly grew to over 5,000 residents. Gambling, opiates and prostitution were very profitable businesses in Deadwood following the population boom.
Two of the most famous brothels were housed in these two buildings, and located upstairs in Saloon No. 10 are paintings of some of the “ladies of the night.”
Deadwood became well-known for its wild and lawless reputation. Murder was common, and the town gained big notoriety for the murder of gunman Wild Bill Hickok. Other characters such as Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, the Sundance Kid, Seth Bullock, Jack McCall and Madame Dora DuFran called Deadwood their home at some point. Today, this historic town is thriving and still has a hint of a wild side with saloons and gambling halls pecked up and down Main Street. And it’s very motorcycle friendly! I’ve got two more days here in Deadwood checking out all the sights and day tripping to many scenic and historic locations near here, so be sure to check back for more! Cheers! 💋
