Who is The Fashionista?

My name is Deb, I’m left-handed, was born on Valentine’s Day, and I have a terrible weakness for Red Velvet cupcakes. I love to be outdoors breathing in every bit of nature that I can wrap myself around, from the mountains to the ocean, the desert to the country. I get extreme enjoyment out of music, am a big-hearted Idealist, possess a huge passion for fashion…and just in the last seven years, have built a life around long-distance motorcycling. That last fact is one which would have been laughable just over ten years ago. I had no interest in motorcycles, whatsoever, back then. In my opinion at the time, they were loud and obnoxious machines that carried around surly, foul-mouthed individuals. Obviously, I was very wrong. My eyes are now open, and I truly embrace the world of two-wheeled glory machines…while maintaining my flair for fashion, even on the road!

After training with my life-long motorcyclist husband for a couple of years on dirt and then on the street, followed by a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course in 2009, I have ridden thousands of miles over several states.
Last year (2014), I set my sights on earning a membership into the Iron Butt Association, via a SaddleSore 1000.
So after 1,060 miles in 23 hours and 15 minutes, traveling from Asheville, North Carolina to St. Paul, Minnesota, I became a full-fledged member of the IBA, and was bitten bad by the long-distance bug. The challenge was definitely a soul-booster for me, and I have plans to continue setting the bar higher and higher – this summer, I have a “Bun Burner” planned (1,500 miles in 36 hours), and will start that ride in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and finish in Rapid City, South Dakota. And, you can be sure that my saddlebags will be packed with sassy outfits and shoes, jewelry, makeup and my beloved curling iron. That’s the way this girl rolls…Iron Butt and all!

Welcome to my page! I look forward to taking you along with me on my journeys, through words, photos and videos, and sharing product and general travel reviews with you, as well as sharing some of the special people I will meet along the way. So hop on, keep calm, and let’s throttle on!!!

My Ride

My Ride
I am the proud owner of a sassy little vintage beauty, a 1994 BMW R1100 RS, pearl white with an unusually colored, stock seat – turquoise blue. Upon my initial inspection of this bike last year at a BMW shop in Durham, North Carolina, I had my doubts. At first glance, I thought that seat color was just plain weird. And secondly, this motorcycle was huge compared to the 2005 BMW F650 GS I had been riding for four years prior. My husband found it online during one of his marathon browse sessions, and felt sure it would be perfect for me. Standing there staring at it in the parking lot that day, I wasn’t so sure. But then I took it for a seven-mile test ride, rolled on that throttle and fell head-over-heels in love. And, the seat? That crazy color grew on me, and at 21-years old, it’s actually pretty comfy.

Motojournalism & Media

I have been blogging about my adventures on Facebook (The Fashionista Has an Iron Butt) since last year’s Iron Butt ride, and had my first article as a “motojournalist” published in a local women’s magazine (Sasee) last February 2015 regarding my SaddleSore 1000. In April 2015, a local cable television show (Inside Out) did an interview with me about my love of fashion coupled with my love of long-distance motorcycling. And the most exciting news to date is my upcoming appearance as a “Contributing Writer” in BMW MOA’s Owners News magazine. Beginning in the August 2015 issue, I will be writing a regular column relaying my experiences and other aspects of long-distance motorcycling. I am exploding with excitement as I prepare for all of the exciting and epic adventures to come. Be sure to subscribe to this page so you won’t miss a thing!
